Inclusion of green initiatives in AfCFTA National Implementation Strategies of 20 African Countries

The signing of the agreement establishing AfCFTA in Kigali, Rwanda, in 21st March 2018 was a key milestone for Africa’s trade Agenda.

The objective of the AfCFTA National Implementation Strategies is to bolster trade and investment with AfCFTA states, in order to support inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.

This project seeks to identify green value chain opportunities and climate change adaptation needs in selected African countries, in order to foster green export opportunities within the AfCFTA.

Objective

The project aims to assist participating countries with the identification, selection and initial development of new regional green value chains (GVCs). The impacts of climate change on selected GVCs will be assessed.

Participating countries in each region will elaborate national strategies to support the development of regional GVCs in an AfCFTA context while enhancing their resilience to climate change.

Activities

National and regional consultations, research by regional experts, regional and national workshops.

Intended Outcomes

The project will result in:

  1. A Green Value Chain Analysis, highlighting challenges and opportunities for the development of regional value chains in the context of the AfCFTA.

  2. A National Strategy to promote green trade and climate change adaptation in selected sectors.

Link to the SDGs

The project will support the advancement of SDGs 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17.
