Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Tems for winning her first Grammy award.
The Nigerian artiste on Sunday became the first female artiste from the country to win the prestigious award.
Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, won the award in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category for her contribution to the hit song Wait for U – a collaboration of musicians Future and Drake.
In a Facebook post on Monday (6 February), Buhari said Tems has put Nigeria in the spotlight for excellence by showcasing her talent to the world, with dedication and hard work.
“President Muhammadu Buhari joins fans and lovers of Nigerian music all over the world in celebrating new heights of recognition and appreciation as Afrobeat crooner, Tems, wins “‘Best Melodic Rap Performance” category at the Grammy Awards.
“President Buhari extols Tems, Temilade Openiyi, for showcasing her talent to the world, with dedication and hard work, which, again, has placed Nigeria in the spotlight for excellence,” Buhari’s aide Femi Adesina posted on Facebook.

President Muhammadu Buhari joins fans and lovers of Nigerian music all over the world in celebrating new heights of recognition and appreciation as Afrobeat crooner, Tems, wins “‘Best Melodic Rap Performance” category at the Grammy Awards.
