The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) will provide a loan package of USD 37 million (EUR 34.79m) to co-finance the construction of a 100-MW solar park in Tunisia.

The package includes USD 20 million in financing from AfDB and USD 17 million in concessional financing from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), a fund managed by the bank, it said on Thursday.

The project is developed by Dubai-based AMEA Power LLC which is planning to begin construction works in the first half of 2023.

The solar park will be built in El Metbassta, in the Kairouan North region, about 150 km (93.2mi) south of the capital Tunis. Once up and running in the first half of 2024, the facility should be capable of generating nearly 230 GWh per year which is enough to supply around 42,878 local households.

The project was awarded in 2019 as part of a 500-MW international tender launched by the Ministry of Industry and SMEs in Tunisia.

AfDB noted in the statement that the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) will also support AMEA Power’s scheme.
